RUNOMI Conference 20 June 2024

On 20 June 2024, the annual congress of the Radboud University Network on Migrant Inclusion (RUNOMI) will be taking place in Nijmegen.

This year’s theme will be ‘Migrant inclusion in theory and practice – debunking myths and redrawing maps in the field of migration’. The theme reflects the two keynote speeches that will be delivered by professors Hein de Haas (University of Amsterdam) and Henk van Houtum (Radboud University) related to their recent publications.

De Haas will talk about his widely acclaimed book How Migration Really Works? A factful Guide to the Most Divisive Issues in Politics (Penguin, 2023) in which he debunks no less than 22 long-standing myths related to migration, followed by a reflection by Tesseltje de Lange (professor of European Migration Law, Radboud University). In Free the Map, published at the beginning of this year (NAI010), Van Houtum tells a new cartographic story representing an alternative version of borders and migration, which will be followed by a reaction by Tineke Strik (professor of Citizenship and Migration Law, Radboud University, and MEP for the Greens/EFA) .

The conference will furthermore highlight research related to migrant inclusion which is conducted by RUNOMI researchers from different disciplines spread across the faculties that are connected to RUNOMI, among whom Noemi Mena Montes (Faculty of Arts), Cesar Eduardo Merlin-Escorza (Nijmegen School of Management) and Lieselotte Blommaert (Faculty of Social Sciences). As RUNOMI strives for its research to have impact not only in theory but also in practice, societal partners such as Muslim Rights Watch and the Dutch Council for Refugees (tbc) will reflect on the academic contributions.
