Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society at Leiden Law School
The MSc program in Law and Society: Governance and Global Development is now recruiting for the 2024-25 cohort! The one-year long, master’s degree is organized by the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Society at Leiden Law School.

The program straddles law and the social sciences, offering students interdisciplinary training in understanding the dynamic relationship between legal norms and social reality. The core curriculum equips students with the conceptual approaches and qualitative empirical research methods necessary to analyze law in context. Specialized electives enable students to dive deeper and focus on particular areas of legal practice—from legal mobilization to regulation and compliance. The program’s global orientation, international atmosphere, and focus on social justice make this a unique master’s program. Please let your students know!

Students who are interested can register here for an “online experience” on 14 March from 16:00 – 17:00 CET.

The deadline to apply for the program is 15 May 2024.

Announcement 2:
The Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law and Society would like to invite you to join the reading group on Foluke Adebisi’s book: Decolonisation and Legal Knowledge (2023). The book is open access and provides an examination of the meanings of decolonisation and explores how this examination can inform teaching, researching, and practising of law. It explores the ways in which the foundations of law are entangled in colonial thought and in its [re]production of ideas of commodification of bodies and space-time.

The Van Vollenhoven Institute (VVI) is based in Leiden Law School and seeks to develop and disseminate socio-legal knowledge and theory regarding the interaction between law, governance and society. More specifically, the Institute studies the emergence, functioning, and evolution of legal institutions.
